A devastating five-storey paying-guest building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area has become one of the biggest stories dominating the country today. The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed on Sunday afternoon while repair work was reportedly underway. Seven people were killed and five others injured, with several victims being young students. Rescue operations continued for around 27 hours before authorities completed the search.
The tragedy has now developed into a major controversy over building safety, unauthorised construction and civic accountability. Three members of the family associated with the property have been arrested. Five MCD officials, including the South Zone deputy commissioner, have also been suspended amid scrutiny of whether proper inspections and enforcement were carried out.
The Delhi High Court has ordered a high-level inquiry and directed authorities to inspect PG accommodations and hostels. The incident has also reached the Supreme Court, which has indicated that it may formulate nationwide guidelines for preventing deaths caused by illegal or unsafe constructions.
The tragedy has sparked a wider conversation about the safety of thousands of students who depend on privately operated PGs because of limited hostel accommodation.
