During the current fiscal year 2026–27, East Coast Railway (ECoR) reached a significant milestone in freight transportation by surpassing the 100 million tonnes (MT) threshold in freight unloading. Reaching the milestone 17 days sooner than the same period last year, ECoR became the first Railway Zone in the nation to do so in FY 2026–27. The achievement highlights ECoR’s ongoing initiatives to increase asset utilization, wagon turnover, and freight handling, thus enabling faster and more effective goods transit across its system.

Over the same time frame in FY 2025–26, ECoR saw a 9. 8% increase in freight release tonnage. Faster freight rake releases, especially of BOBRN and BOXN waggons, and better wagon handling have aided the expansion. The number of BOXN wagons released has grown by 7. 3%, and the number of BOBRN wagons released has grown by 9. 8% in comparison to the same period in the prior fiscal year. Better turnaround and increased efficiency in freight operations are indicated by the better wagon release.

ECoR has also registered 3.9% growth in freight loading, while freight earnings have grown by 3.2% during the corresponding period. These gains reflect the Zone’s continued focus on increasing freight throughput and making optimum use of available railway assets. Freight transportation through ECoR caters to the requirements of major industries and businesses, supporting the movement of essential commodities and raw materials. The improved unloading and wagon release performance will further facilitate faster, smoother and more cost effective transportation, strengthening the role of railways in the logistics chain.
