Plagiarism is a significant concern for institutions at a time when the usage of AI techniques has increased dramatically. By outright prohibiting ChatGPT, RV University in Bengaluru has recently taken steps to reduce the use of such technologies. Other universities in the city, like Dayananda Sagar University and the International Institute of Information Technology – Bangalore (IIIT-B), which have already created anti-plagiarism policies, support the initiative.
Sanjay Chitnis, dean of computer science and engineering at RV University, has stated that students should only submit original works for evaluation and that the use of AI-generated content would not be permitted. If there is any doubt regarding the submission’s originality, the university will conduct a surprise check to verify that students are not abusing such tools. Students could also be asked to review the material independently. For general lectures and lab sessions, ChatGPT has been restricted by the universities.
Different steps have been taken to address the issue by other universities. While Dayananda Sagar University modified the type of assignments, Christ University has published a list of AI bots that are prohibited. A small committee led by IIIT-B has been formed to design a framework for employing ChatGPT to prevent plagiarism. In a recent study by a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, ChatGPT 3 was found to be successful in passing the program’s final exam for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. A different professor at Minnesota University Law School offered ChatGPT the same test that students take, consisting of 12 essay questions and 95 multiple-choice questions. ChatGPT passed the exam after producing essays on a variety of subjects, including torts, taxation, and constitutional law.
Universities have made it plain that any usage of content produced by AI would not be tolerated given the current circumstances. They expect that by implementing these measures, they can guarantee that students only submit original materials.
