Authorities have apprehended 25 individuals in relation to the mob assault at Channagiri police station in Karnataka

The Criminal Investigation Department has been assigned the investigation into the case. Officials reported that at least 25 individuals have been detained thus far regarding a mob assault on Channagiri police station. This incident occurred in Davangere district’s Channagiri town during the early hours of Saturday, resulting in the vandalization of the police station and damage to several vehicles, allegedly in response to a custodial death. At least 11 police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. The suspects in custody are facing charges under sections 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of their duty) and 307 (Attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, and they have been placed in judicial custody.

Adil, aged 30, was apprehended on May 24 over suspicions of engaging in gambling activities within the district, according to police reports. Authorities further stated that his health declined thereafter, resulting in his death.

Upon hearing news of his demise, relatives of the deceased, accompanied by a sizable crowd, embarked on a rampage, vandalizing police vehicles and pelting stones at the police station. They alleged that Adil had passed away while in police custody.

In response to the attack on the police station, the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the inspector of Channagiri police station have been suspended.
