BackBack Two killed, seven missing as boat capsizes in Odisha’s Mahanadi River

A boat flipped on Friday night, killing at least two persons and leaving dozens more unaccounted for. The event happened in the Odisha district of Jharsuguda as the boat was transporting passengers over the Mahanadi river. According to police, the boat was carrying about fifty people from Chattisgarh, a neighboring state, who were returning from a temple.

As soon as they learned about the tragedy, nearby police and fire departments were at the scene. Rescue efforts are under progress, according to Jharsuguda SP Smit Parmar. 35 people were saved by locals when the boat overturned near Sarada Ghat. An additional seven people had been taken back to the bank by police and fire service personnel.

“There were three children and four women among the missing people. Northen Range Inspector Himansu Lal told PTI over the phone that “the search and rescue operation will continue till the last person is located.”

“Unsettling news has reached us regarding the death of an individual as a result of a boat capsizing in Mahanadi, close to the Patthar Seni temple near Sharda village in the Odisha district of Jharsuguda. 45 individuals have been saved, however. Searches are ongoing for the six who remain missing. The district administration of Raigarh and the Jharsuguda administration have established coordination,” tweeted Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
