Hailing from the Sundargarh district and educated in the vibrant steel city of Rourkela, Bapi Sarkhel grew up as the only son in a modest family with big dreams. His journey to Paradeep Port Town was driven by the aspiration to become a successful businessman. But destiny had a bigger role written for him. Over the years, he transitioned from a young entrepreneur into a “Robin Hood of Paradeep” — a voice, a guide, and a powerful support system for thousands of youths and workers across the region.
Champion of Employment & Youth Empowerment
Upon arriving in Paradeep, Bapi Sarkhel witnessed the struggles of unemployed youths and workers in the fast-growing industrial belt. Instead of walking away, he stepped forward. He played a key role in helping thousands of young people find employment in Paradeep’s industrial sector, enabling many to stand on their own feet and secure a stable future for their families. His dedication earned him tremendous respect, especially among the working class.
A Leader Who Built a Workers’ Movement
To institutionalize his fight for workers’ rights, he founded the Paradeep Ersama Industrial Workers Union, which today has an impressive membership of nearly 14,500 workers from both small and large industries. Under his leadership, the union became a formidable force advocating fair treatment, job security, and dignity at the workplace.
His influence extended beyond the industrial gates. The union made history by winning the Paradeep Port Trust Board election twice, securing the position of Labour Trustee — a testament to the trust and affection workers place in him.
A Political Journey Rooted in Service
Bapi Sarkhel’s public appeal naturally drew him into electoral politics. He contested the 2014 and 2019 Legislative Assembly elections as a candidate of the Indian National Congress, securing around 50,000 votes each time. Though he narrowly missed victory, his strong vote share reflected the deep connection he shares with the people of Paradeep and Ersama.
Commitment to Social Development
Beyond politics and trade unionism, he continues to work at the grassroots level through his NGO — Paradeep Ersama Industrial Development Council — focusing on welfare, community upliftment, and local development initiatives.
In 2023, showcasing his belief in independent leadership and people-driven governance, he formed the AMA PARADEEP AMA PRAGATI GROUP. The group contested the Paradeep Municipal Elections with independent candidates and achieved a landmark victory — winning 10 Councillor seats including the Vice Chairperson of Paradeep Municipality.
A Humble Heart with an Unshakeable Mission
Despite his achievements, Bapi Sarkhel remains a down-to-earth, approachable, and compassionate leader. His life has been dedicated to uplifting the underprivileged, fighting for the backward and downstream communities, and ensuring that every worker and youth gets the opportunity they deserve.
