Q: Congratulations on your first book, “Madam President.” How did you become involved in writing the biography of President Droupadi Murmu?
A: It’s incredible how everything unfolded! Just three days after President Droupadi Murmu’s name was announced as the Presidential candidate of the NDA, I received an unexpected call from Penguin India. I’m still uncertain about how my name came up, but I believe my long-standing connection to the BBC, where I’ve been reporting from Odisha for over 28 years, might have played a role. The surprise was truly pleasant because, truth be told, I had never written a book before. Being a journalist, my roots have always been deeply intertwined with Odisha, and perhaps they saw the value in having someone from the state write the biography. Moreover, my entire adolescence was spent in Mayurbhanj, and my wife, who hails from Baripada, further strengthens my ties to the district. It seems like a perfect alignment of circumstances that led me to take on this remarkable endeavour.
Q: Can you tell us about your research process and the challenges you faced while gathering information for the book?
A: With limited authentic information available in the public domain about President Droupadi Murmu when she was announced as the Presidential candidate, I took it upon myself to delve deep into her extraordinary life. I made a conscious effort to reach out to individuals who have known her since childhood, witnessed her growth, and observed her closely. This included conversations with her schoolmates, teachers, colleagues, and even people from her village. To gain a comprehensive understanding, I embarked on a journey to various places significant to her, such as Rairangpur, her hometown Uparbela, and her in-laws’ place Pahadpur. I didn’t stop there—I travelled to Ranchi, where she served as the Governor for six years, and had the privilege of meeting key individuals who provided invaluable insights. Immersing myself in these experiences, connecting with people on the ground, and engaging in meaningful interactions became the essence of my information-gathering process. Additionally, I delved into her remarkable journey in the Odisha Assembly, where she earned the prestigious Nilakantha Award as the best legislator in 2007. Uncovering the intricate details of her captivating life proved to be both challenging and immensely enjoyable.
Q: What are the key aspects of President Droupadi Murmu’s life and character that stood out during your research?
A: There are two remarkable aspects that stood out to me about President Droupadi Murmu. Firstly, her unwavering fortitude and strength of character in the face of immense personal tragedy. Losing her husband and two young sons within a span of just four years would have shattered anyone, yet she displayed incredible resilience and dedicated herself to serving the people. Her ability to rise above adversity is truly inspiring.
Secondly, her genuine empathy and compassion for fellow human beings, especially those who are marginalized and neglected, are truly commendable. It’s captivating to witness how she maintained this quality even after stepping into the realm of politics, where many tend to lose touch with the concerns of everyday people. Throughout the book, you’ll come across fascinating anecdotes that showcase her innate humanity and her unwavering willingness to go the extra mile to assist those in need. These qualities make her immensely likable, and it’s these very traits that have endeared her to countless individuals.
Q: Did you have the opportunity to interview President Droupadi Murmu for the book “Madam President”?
A: No, the interview was not granted. Although no reasons were explicitly provided, I presume that it was due to the possibility of my meeting with her giving the impression that the book was an authorized biography. Given that she had no control over its contents, there might have been concerns about potential controversies arising in the future that could potentially embarrass her, given her esteemed position. However, I have taken the initiative to request an appointment to meet her and present her with a copy of the book after its official launch. I have been assured that I will have the opportunity to have an audience with the President, although the exact date is yet to be finalized.
Q: Could you highlight one of President Droupadi Murmu’s significant contributions to society?
A: One of President Droupadi Murmu’s most notable contributions to tribal society is her remarkable achievement in gaining recognition for the Santhali language and the Ol Chiki script. Despite having existed since 1925, Santhali had received little attention until she took up the cause as a minister in the Odisha government and a member of the tribal advisory council. She met with the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and effectively conveyed the importance of including the Santhali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which enumerates official languages. Vajpayee was highly impressed by her presentation, and within a mere six months, the long-awaited recognition was granted. This accomplishment stands as one of her most significant contributions to tribal society.
Q: How did President Droupadi Murmu’s tribal background influence her political journey?
A: Being a tribal had its advantages and disadvantages for President Droupadi Murmu. Initially, it proved to be a boon as she emerged victorious in her first election as a municipal councillor in Rairangpur, a seat reserved for tribal women. With her educational background, government service, and teaching experience, she became a sought-after candidate for various political parties. Eventually, she chose to contest for the BJP. Her exceptional work as a councillor and vice-chairperson of the NAC, particularly in areas like sanitation and drinking water, earned her popularity among the people. When the assembly elections arrived three years later, with the BJP and BJD forming an alliance, the Rairangpur constituency was earmarked for the BJP. Her popularity and tribal background played to her advantage. However, in later years, she did face some instances of discrimination based on her tribal identity, although they were not significant. Nevertheless, when she ascended to the presidency, the fact that she was the first “tribal” woman garnered significant attention in the media. Throughout her political journey, her tribal background has proven to be both advantageous and challenging.
Q: Can you share an interesting anecdote about President Droupadi Murmu that you discovered during your research?
A: President Droupadi Murmu is not only a dedicated politician but also a multi-talented individual, excelling in singing and sports. During her tenure as the Governor in Ranchi, she extended a warm invitation to five of her closest friends, treating them to a luxurious five-day stay. As a nostalgic nod to tradition, they decided to have their final meal served on Sal leaves, known as “khali patra” in Odia, reminiscent of earlier times. Together, including the Governor herself, they sat down to skillfully stitch these plates from Sal leaves. One of the invited friends enthusiastically shared with me that Murmu’s plate was the most exceptional and perfectly symmetrical of them all.

A: I encourage readers to delve into the remarkable life of President Droupadi Murmu beyond the pages of my book. Her story serves as a powerful inspiration for all, illustrating how one can achieve great success despite facing adversity and personal tragedies. Her unwavering resilience and unwavering commitment to serving the people exemplify that anyone driven by the desire to make a positive impact can find a way to do so. Her life stands as a testament to triumphing over challenges and overcoming discrimination, and it is my sincere hope that readers will draw inspiration from her extraordinary journey.
