Under the accused professor’s supervision, a woman who was working on a Ph.D. thesis claimed that he sexually assaulted and mentally tormented her.The Santiniketan police station in Bolpur town said that a senior professor at Visva-Bharati, Bengal’s only central university and located in Birbhum district, was detained on Saturday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a lady who had been working on a Ph.D thesis under his supervision since 2016.Because the lady also accused the professor of molesting her, the first information report (FIR) was filed on May 31 under nine sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The defendant appeared in court in Bolpur and was remanded in police custody. On condition of anonymity, a police officer said, “The arrest was made after the complainant’s statement was recorded by a judicial magistrate on June 2.”The police officer continued, “The woman alleged that she filed written complaints with Visva-Bharati in June 2022, but nothing was done.”The complainant is a teacher at a college in north Bengal who began her part-time research project there at Visva-Bharati in 2016 with the accused serving as her mentor.
“The accusations are false. Dates of the alleged crimes have been specifically given by the complainant. After being taken into custody on Saturday, the suspect informed the local media, “You will find that she was on duty in north Bengal on those dates.”The sexual harassment committee at the university performed a comprehensive investigation and issued its report. The committee is not permitted to punish an accuser in any way. That decision is made by the highest authority, she stated.
