According to reports, Bajrang Punia and other prominent protesting wrestlers met Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday. The protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, head of the Wrestling Federation of India, are being led by wrestler Bajrang Punia, who has stated that there has been no “setting” between the wrestlers and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.Punia said to NDTV that although the government had instructed him and his fellow wrestlers to keep their meeting with Shah a secret, they had instead revealed it to the media.According to Punia, the home minister informed the wrestlers that an investigation was being conducted. The protest, the grappler emphasised, has not subsided and will go on.
After threatening to throw their medals into the Ganga in Haridwar, the protesting wrestlers met with the home minister on Saturday. The meeting had gone on until after midnight as the Bharat Janata Party MP Brij Bhushan Singh’s arrest was being pushed for.Punia stated that the athletes are not pleased with the government’s response because it is not granting their demands during the interview with NDTV. He claimed that the wrestlers would stand by their promises of action and questioned Shah as to why Singh had not been detained and had been protected.
Punia claims that the home minister gave them the assurance that the administration was talking about it and would undoubtedly take action. Punia remembered how the wrestlers had returned in January based on promises from the administration and “were declared liars.”When questioned about rumours regarding the protests’ outcome when wrestlers like him returned to their jobs with the Railways, Punia stated that they had taken a leave of absence from their jobs and had returned for one day to sign in after being removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site. He also claimed that if the government jobs proved to be a barrier to the uprising, the wrestlers would be willing to resign from them.
