Bhubaneswar Adds 14 More Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) Centres

Bhubaneswar will add 14 more Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Centers and BMC like several other urban local bodies of Odisha carries manages the solid waste in a scientific manner at Micro Composting Centers (MCC) and MRFs.

According to the reports, Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Singh stated that Bhubaneswar has a target of a total of 41 MCCs and 10 MRFs. On the basis of solid waste generated in the city, more MRFs are being planned. Currently, 4 MRFs are completely functional, civil construction of eight are over and the rest are in process.

The report further added that in MRF recyclable materials like cardboard, glass, plastic materials, clothes, leather, shoes and other materials are segregated for its processing. The materials are pressed in the belling machine and passed over to certified recyclers of the State Pollution Control Board. Besides, there are weighing machines and napkin incinerators in each unit.

The BMC stated that an awareness drive is continuing for door to door segregated waste collection. Swachha Sathis, Sanitary Inspectors, Sanitation Experts and Swachha Bhubaneswar Abhiyan Cell Experts are facilitating the drive to promote a circular economy. Active community participation in the drive will contribute to Sustainable Development goals.

Five Swachha Karmis from the rag pickers’ group is engaged in each MRF. They support in segregation of recyclable materials and get a monthly incentive of Rs 7000. Total 24 MRFs planned will fulfil the need of 67 wards whereas 10 numbers will be in North Zone and 7 each will function in South East and South West Zone respectively.
