by Subhechcha Ganguly

After an illustrious tenure as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Odisha, Sushil Kumar Lohani has been given the additional responsibility of the Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Department. The PR & DW department is in a state of flux with a suite of reforms rolled out to upgrade the quality of life at the grassroots. Mr Lohani’s leadership acumen will be of significance in ensuring the smooth continuity of projects that have weaved a tale of transformation at the bottom of the pyramid.

Mr Lohani as the CEO played a stellar role in the smooth conduct of the recent Padmapur by-poll. He made elaborate arrangements including the convening of an all-party meeting to avert any untoward incident during the elections.

It was decided that 50 per cent of booths will be webcast and 35 micro-observers will be appointed in the polling booths in order to conduct the polls in a peaceful manner. Adequate security arrangements have been made to conduct the Padampur bypoll in a transparent, free and fair manner.Hence it could offer a model conduct of by-election in recent times at any measures.

Mr Lohani served as the Collector and District Magistrate of Gajapati & Keonjhar district respectively. During his tenure in the Gajapati district, he was credited with taking several innovative steps such as setting up a night shelter for transgender people and launching special drives against child marriage.
He has also initiated the most sought-after initiative called District Mineral- Peripheral Development Fund to scale up the welfare schemes of the common people by the mining affected areas in Keonjhar District as the DM.This initiative had garnered many applauds at that time across the State. Then,he was the only officer who believed that the ordinary citizens of the mining affected areas must be taken care of their livelihoods & overall developments by the respective Industries in the mining region.

Mr Lohani is an inspirational IAS officer who has made a positive difference in the lives of many through his initiatives. He is an example for all aspiring civil servants as he demonstrates that it is possible to bring about real change if one works hard and with dedication. His achievements have been recognised at both national and international levels which speaks volumes about his commitment towards public service.
