Building Odisha’s AI Nerve Centre: Arya Vedabrata

CEO of ByteIQ

FEATURE: In a world swiftly spinning on the axis of artificial intelligence, Arya Vedabrata has managed to not only keep pace but also shape the contours of this evolving domain. With over two decades of experience in data science and AI, Arya’s journey is a striking testament to the power of vision, resilience, and the will to return home and give back. Today, as the Co-Founder and CEO of ByteIQ, a Bhubaneswar-based niche AI & Data company, he is leading a quiet but potent revolution—one byte at a time.

Arya’s journey started in the classrooms of D.A.V. Public School Unit 8 and later B.J.B. College. In 2003, when Information Technology was just making its way into the mainstream curriculum, he enrolled at NIST, Berhampur, becoming one of the earliest students to explore the potential of this budding discipline.

After completing his B.E., Arya began his professional journey with CanBay, a credit card domain company, through campus placement. He later moved to Computer Science Corporation, where he got hands-on experience with analytics — a field that would soon become his calling. This led him to Citibank, where he worked in the marketing analytics team, followed by a key role at Bank of America. There, he wasn’t just part of the system — he helped build it. In fact, Arya built the first India-based data science team for Bank of America in 2008.

Over the next few years, his career saw stints at some of the biggest names in finance and technology — Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, and Qualcomm. With over 18 years of experience in building data science and analytics functions for these major corporations, Arya had seen how powerful data could be when paired with strategic thinking and innovation.

But despite his global success, something kept tugging at him — a desire to return home and give back. “I felt a strong urge to return to Bhubaneswar to empower students with emerging tech exposure,” he shared. That desire birthed ByteIQ, a niche AI and Data company that today boasts a team of 50 employees spread across geographies.

At ByteIQ, Arya doesn’t just oversee operations — he inspires a culture. “We bring in a culture of AI-powered business operations in all our client engagements,” he explained. The company works across data streams that include engineering, analytics, data science, and generative AI. Arya believes that every byte of data has a story to tell — one that can drive meaningful change when paired with what he calls “Innovation Quotient.” That’s how the name ByteIQ was born — a blend of the smallest data unit and the spark of innovation.

Under Arya’s leadership, ByteIQ has worked across diverse sectors — from optimizing airport infrastructure and forecasting jewelry demand to refining insurance underwriting processes. This breadth of expertise is made possible through a unique approach known as the “I-Lens” framework. The framework helps the team analyze organizational data to spot opportunities for innovation, regardless of industry. Arya recalled how they used passenger data at airports to minimize energy waste and improve infrastructure usage. In the jewelry domain, their AI-generated designs have helped customers visualize and choose better.

One of Arya’s most rewarding ventures is CardStory, an AI platform launching soon. Developed over 1.5 years, the platform analyzes public credit card data and suggests the best card options based on users’ lifestyles and spending habits. “It was challenging due to the unstructured data, but we’re proud of how it turned out,” Arya said. CardStory also scores credit card providers based on transparency — a feature Arya feels is crucial in today’s data-driven consumer economy.

Despite all his experience, Arya admits that the transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship wasn’t easy. “You lose the corporate comfort — HR, finance, even distribution. In startups, you prioritize top performers with limited resources. I initially struggled with uneven rewards causing team friction,” he shared candidly. But over time, he learned how to turn these challenges into strengths.

One of his proudest achievements has been nurturing local talent in Odisha. Arya believes that the state has an untapped pool of capable minds. “Talent exists. Big companies just underutilize freshers. At ByteIQ, we involve them in real client projects within weeks.” He even mentioned how a fresher was leading client interactions in their very first week — a testament to the trust and empowerment culture Arya has fostered.

When asked about the future of AI in Odisha, Arya is optimistic. He believes that with increasing government focus on tech and the city’s evolving infrastructure, Bhubaneswar could emerge as an international tech hub within a decade. “Startups here are already solving local problems through AI. As corporate investment grows, advanced technologies will follow,” he said.

Arya’s five-year plan for ByteIQ reflects a bold shift — from being a consulting firm to becoming a product-first company. With the success of CardStory, he aims to roll out more AI/ML-based tools under what he calls “productized science.” It’s a transformation that could redefine ByteIQ’s identity and impact.

For young Odias considering life abroad, Arya offers balanced advice: “Go learn globally, but plan to return. Bhubaneswar’s quality of life is improving — infrastructure, amenities — and with the right mindset, you can give back meaningfully.”

As for the broader future of AI, Arya strikes a note of caution. “It will become ubiquitous. Every internet-connected device will have AI. That raises security risks — hacked smart devices could compromise privacy. And jobs will change — fewer coders, more AI engineers.” He emphasizes the importance of responsible AI usage, not just by developers but also by consumers.

To entrepreneurs in the early stages of their journey, Arya’s message is clear: embrace the struggle, but stay grounded. “Profitability matters more than funding hype. Solve real problems. Sustainable profit ensures everyone — employees, partners — benefits in the long run.”

Arya Vedabrata’s story is one of returning, rebuilding, and reimagining. From steering data teams at Wall Street giants to nurturing AI talent in Odisha, he has shown that true innovation doesn’t need to be born in Silicon Valley — it can emerge from home, powered by purpose.
