Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik proposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set up an international airport at Puri. CM wrote a letter to PM where he has projected that the proposed airport at Puri to be in the name of Sri Jagannath International Airport.
Earlier the state government mentioned the land for the project, and even the land has been identified at Puri. It will extend all possible assistance to the Centre for establishing the airport in a record time.
In the letter, CM Patnaik stated that Puri is the abode of Lord Jagannath and is among the Char Dhams of Hindus who visit the Jagannath Temple in the town from all over the World. Even the Sun Temple at Konark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is 35 km from Puri and the adjacent Ramachandi-Chandrabhaga beaches. These places attract thousands of tourists from all over the World and are considered as the most famous tourist place in Odisha.
Even the coastal highway passes through Puri and also connects the Paradip port and greenfield Astarang port.
Naveen Patnaik said, “Most of the historic Buddhist Heritage sites like Dhauli and Ratnagiri, with travel time within 3 hours from Puri, attract Buddhist Pilgrims from across the World. The long coastline and adjoining bay area near Puri are ideal locations for promoting new world economic activities, leisure and hospitality, health, and spiritual centers. We believe that Puri has the potential to become a hub for spiritual tourism and economic activities.”
He requested the Ministry of civil Civil Aviation may be asked to take up this airport as a priority project.
