Cyclone Yaas Weakens Into A Deep Depression Over Jharkhand

The Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ weakened into a Deep Depression on May 26 night and is to weaken gradually into a Depression by May 27 morning, as informed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the report, the system lay centred over South Jharkhand and adjoining North Interior Odisha about 60 km west-southwest of Jamshedpur and 110 km south-southeast of Ranchi at 11.30 PM.

The report further informed that it is very likely to move further northwestwards and weaken gradually into a Depression during the next 12 hours.

Jharkhand was put on high alert and a complete lockdown was imposed in some parts of the state to prevent people from venturing out as the authorities evacuated those staying in low-lying areas and shifted them to storm centres ahead of the Cyclone’s expected arrival in the state and as many as 10,000 people were moved to safer zones.

Because of the depression during the next 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall is to occur at most places with heavy to very heavy rains at a few places over North Interior Odisha.

Light to moderate rainfall is to occur at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Medinipur, Jhargram and Bankura in West Bengal.

Similarly, during the next 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall is to occur at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall and extremely heavy falls at isolated places in Jharkhand.

At least four people were killed due to the storm and many homes were damaged and flooded farmland in West Bengal and Odisha. More than 21 lakh people had to be evacuated from danger zones in Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand.
