In a development unrelated to the ongoing protests, Delhi-NCR commuters have received a major infrastructure update with a 9-kilometre section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway between the DND Flyway and Jaitpur opening for trial operations.

The National Highways Authority of India has begun trial operations on the newly constructed section. The road is expected to improve connectivity between parts of Delhi and Faridabad, while also creating a more direct connection to the wider Delhi-Mumbai Expressway network.

At present, the trials are being conducted on the carriageway heading towards Faridabad via Jaitpur. Authorities are using the trial period to assess the road’s operational readiness before its full opening.

Why is the new section important?

The DND–Jaitpur link is expected to provide a faster alternative for commuters travelling between Delhi and Faridabad. It is particularly relevant for traffic around areas such as:

  • DND Flyway
  • Ashram
  • Kalindi Kunj
  • Jaitpur
  • Faridabad

The new connection is expected to take some pressure off existing routes, particularly busy stretches of Mathura Road. Reports say the improved connectivity could eventually make the Delhi–Faridabad journey considerably quicker for many commuters.

The section forms part of the larger DND–KMP/Delhi-Mumbai Expressway connectivity project, which is intended to create a high-speed road connection from Delhi through Faridabad and onward towards the wider expressway network.

The 9-km section has faced construction delays in the past, including complications associated with the Agra Canal crossing, which required changes to the original engineering plan. Earlier project updates had put the construction cost of the DND-to-Jaitpur section at around ₹1,836 crore.

What happens next?

The current opening is a trial operation rather than the final full-scale opening. Authorities will assess traffic movement and the performance of the newly constructed section during the trial period before regular operations are fully established.

For Delhi-NCR residents, however, the development is important: once fully operational, the link should provide a smoother connection from the DND side of Delhi towards Faridabad and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway corridor, potentially reducing congestion on some of the region’s heavily used roads.
