“Delhi LG Orders Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants”

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena on Friday directed the city’s Police Commissioner to launch a month-long special campaign to identify illegal immigrants in the capital. The operation will be conducted in coordination with central agencies. Saxena also instructed civic bodies, including the MCD, NDMC, and Delhi’s Chief Secretary, to remain on “high alert” as illegal immigrants might attempt to obtain fake citizenship and election identity documents. This directive comes as Delhi prepares for its upcoming assembly elections in February. BJP leaders in the city have accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of supporting illegal immigrants, particularly Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, residing in the city.

In a letter sent on Thursday to the Chief Secretary of Delhi, as well as the Police Commissioner, MCD Commissioner, and Chairman of NDMC, the LG office highlighted concerns about a sudden increase in the number of illegal immigrants in the city. According to reports from social media and other reliable sources, there has been a rise in encroachments by these individuals on public roads, footpaths, and parks. The letter also raised alarms about efforts to obtain identity documents, such as Aadhaar cards and election ID cards, using fake or manipulated documents. These documents are reportedly being presented as proof of citizenship by the illegal immigrants.
