Dr. Ramanuj Narayan: A Legacy of Scientific Excellence and Innovation

FEATURE: In the ever-evolving world of scientific research, leadership is not just about holding titles — it is about shaping visions, inspiring teams, and pushing the boundaries of knowledge. On May 1, 2023, Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, an accomplished scientist and academic leader, assumed charge as the Director of CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), Bhubaneswar. His arrival marks a significant moment for the institution — a new chapter in its long legacy of scientific excellence, innovation, and service to the nation.

Dr. Narayan’s journey is one defined by perseverance, intellect, and an enduring commitment to science. Born and educated in Bihar, he laid his academic foundation at M.D. College, Naubatpur (Magadh University), before moving to Delhi University, NIT Jamshedpur, and later to IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and CSIR-IICT Hyderabad for his doctoral research. These formative years shaped his deep expertise in chemical sciences, materials research, and industrial applications, setting the course for a career that would straddle both the worlds of pure science and technological innovation.

Before stepping into the corridors of CSIR, Dr. Narayan spent crucial years in industry, working with Asian Cosmos R&D, Tata Steel, and Tata Autocomp Systems. Between 2002 and 2008, he cultivated a practical understanding of how scientific discoveries translate into real-world impact — a perspective that has since become a hallmark of his leadership style.

Joining CSIR-IICT Hyderabad in 2008, Dr. Narayan quickly distinguished himself as a leading figure in polymer research, nanomaterials, functional and hybrid materials, and advanced coating technologies. His contributions — more than 110 peer-reviewed publications, six patents, multiple book chapters, and an edited volume — have not only advanced the frontiers of material science but have also forged critical links between research and industrial application. His leadership extended beyond the laboratory, serving as Chair of the Department of Polymers and Functional Materials and as Dean and Outstanding Professor at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR).

Throughout his career, Dr. Narayan has been recognized for his ability to blend rigorous research with visionary thinking. Awards such as the Berger Elite Researcher Award for Coating Excellence (2019), the Newton Prize (2017), the IPA Award for Coating Research (2015), and the IICT Gaurav Samman (2011) stand as testament to the impact of his work on both national and international platforms. Yet for Dr. Narayan, the true measure of success lies not just in accolades but in mentorship — in the scientists he has nurtured, the students he has guided, and the collaborative spirit he has cultivated within the research community.

The transition of leadership at CSIR-IMMT was marked with warmth and optimism. Dr. G. Narahari Sastry, who handed over the reins, praised Dr. Narayan as a dynamic and visionary scientist, capable of taking the institute to new heights. In his first address, Dr. Narayan expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the mentorship he had received and the collaborative efforts of the more than 100 scientists, technical experts, and staff who form the backbone of CSIR-IMMT.

As Director, Dr. Ramanuj Narayan now stands at the forefront of guiding the institute into a future of sustainable technologies, advanced materials research, and industrial solutions aligned with national priorities. His career embodies a rare blend of academic brilliance, industrial insight, and human leadership — qualities that will undoubtedly shape the next phase of CSIR-IMMT’s journey.

In a world increasingly driven by innovation and transformation, leaders like Dr. Narayan remind us that true scientific progress is not just about discovery — it is about vision, perseverance, and the courage to build a better future.
