Mahimananda Mishra, MD at Orissa Stevedores Ltd (OSL)
Mahimananda Mishra, stevedoring giant and managing director at Orissa Stevedores Ltd (OSL) is one of the best-known homebred entrepreneurs from Odisha. A first-generation entrepreneur, he made a mark for himself, holding aloft Odia pride in a domain ruled by non-Odias.
A postgraduate in Arts from Utkal University, Mishra chose the path of business as his career and brought scores of rewards and recognitions for both himself and his group (OSL) since its inception in 1978.
Being the Managing Director of OSL Group, Mishra has tasted success in varied fields ranging from Stevedoring, Construction, Automobile, Civil Aviation Hospitality, Entertainment, Steel to Education and Mining.
Under the leadership of Mishra, OSL, a premium and reputed stevedoring house of Paradeep port, has not only created new records but has also broken many old ones in its quest for excellence by handling more than 90 per cent of the total Paradeep Port cargo.
This is one of the hundred instances of achieving new milestones by the amalgamation of a strong team of 3000+ employees and its leader, a great visionary. The only son among ten siblings, Mishra completed his school and college from Cuttack, the place of his birth and also the headquarters of the OSL Group.
His father Rabindra Nath Mishra was a keen laureate, whose Odia and Bengali books were very popular in schools. Mahimananda Mishra played a long inning in student politics. While studying in the famous Christ College and Cuttack’s Law College, he was elected as the president of the students union.
Instead of going for a secured government job, Mishra dared to tread on a path, which had not been travelled ever before. There were numerous hurdles on the way of being an entrepreneur but so confident he was of his ability and success that he continued relentlessly on his chosen path, only to emerge as the undisputed winner.
Mishra had the privilege to receive encouragement from the then chairman of Paradip Port Trust and entered into Stevedoring at Paradip Port during the mid-70s.
He got his first break in 1979 when he successfully completed the shipment of Care Foods for shipping company American President’s Line, creating a record of sorts.
Mishra also took up the challenge of developing the seasonal port at Gopalpur into an all-weather port. He forged a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with Hong Kong-based Noble Group and Sara International of Delhi and the consortium emerged as the successful bidder in the global tenders.
But Nature’s fury has played spoilsport with Mishra’s port dreams. Two back-to-back severe cyclonic storms– Phailin and HudHud have wrought much damage to the facilities at Gopalpur port.
Now, Mishra and his dedicated team are making untiring efforts to restore the port to its original shape. The Gopalpur port has re-commenced commercial operations.
A self-made man, Mahima Mishra helms the OSL Group– a business empire in its own right, offering a comprehensive bouquet of services and handling a whopping quantity of Paradeep port’s cargo.
