Information indicates that market prices have increased, with each egg currently retailing for Rs 9. The price was Rs 7.15 just a few days ago, which is an abrupt increase of around Rs 2 per egg. Wholesale pricing also show the rise. The price of an egg tray has dropped from Rs 180 to Rs 270.
Speaking on the subject, Gokulananda Mallick, Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development, blamed a number of factors, including rising demand, for the increase in egg prices.
While merchants offer eggs to customers for about Rs 9, dealers today sell them for Rs 7.15 paise. He ascribed the rise to increased egg exports and growing worldwide demand. Aside from this, he stated that an increase in poultry death rates this summer has affected total productivity.
The government has declared further assistance for the poultry industry in order to close the supply deficit. A subsidy of up to Rs 1 crore is already provided by the government. In order to meet the demand for eggs, another subsidy of Rs 10 crore would now be given, he added. According to the Minister, once output increases, prices should decline. To accommodate rising demand and stabilize the market, the state government has set a daily production goal of two crore eggs.
