A head-on accident at Riversdale on Tuesday claimed the lives of four persons, including umpire Rudi Koertzen. After a weekend of golf, the 73-year-old was returning home from Cape Town when the awful event occurred. He travelled to a golf event with some friends, who were supposed to return on Monday, but it appears they opted to play another round of golf instead, according to his son. One of only three umpires to preside in more over 100 Tests, he stood in a record 209 One Day Internationals. Following the 2007 Cricket World Cup match between the West Indies and England, Koertzen officiated in a record 209 One-Day Internationals, breaking the previous mark of 172 held by legendary umpire David Shepherd.
