Taiwan Arraigns China Of Preparing Invasion, Holds Defence Drill

Taiwan’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that China is using military drills to rehearse an invasion of Taiwan’s autonomous democracy, while Taiwan’s military is ready to repel any possible attack.

Joseph Wu said Beijing aims to establish its dominance in the Western Pacific and annex Taiwan, which it claims is its territory. It included and would prevent the United States and its allies from supporting Taiwan, he said at a news conference in Taipei.

China claims that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island last week sparked the drills, but Wu said China has used Pelosi’s visit as an excuse. He said China was using it as a pretext for the threats it was preparing. China also banned some Taiwanese food imports after the visit and cut off dialogue with the US on issues ranging from military contacts to fighting cross-border crime and climate change.

Taiwan is an important supplier of computer chips to the global economy, including China’s high-tech sector. At a time when the world is facing turmoil and uncertainty, a widespread crisis in the Taiwan Strait, a major global trade corridor, could have a major impact on international supply chains.
