Fuelling the Future: Ayaskant Kanungo’s Vision for OCPL’s Success

FEATURE: A visionary with a track record of excellence, Ayaskant Kanungo exemplifies leadership in India’s energy sector. With a degree in Electrical engineering from NIT Rourkela and an MBA in finance, Kanungo’s career has taken him from Siemens in Germany to influential roles back in India. Today, as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Odisha Coal and Power Limited (OCPL), he is redefining coal mining with a sustainable and strategic approach.

Established in 2015 as a joint venture between Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) and Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC), OCPL was founded to mine and supply coal for OPGC’s power plants. Under Kanungo’s leadership, the young company has emerged as a formidable force in India’s coal industry. With milestones such as a 150% increase in coal production and dispatch, a 5-star rated  from the Ministry of Coal for three consecutive years and efficient operations with minimal manpower, OCPL is setting new benchmarks in the Coal mining sector.

“OCPL was envisioned to be one of the best coal mining companies in India,” Kanungo states. “Today, our turnover has reached ₹2,000 crores and we are striving to achieve ₹10,000 crores in the next five to six years. By acquiring new Coal mines and optimizing our operational costs, we aim to solidify our place among the industry’s best.”

The coal industry in India is not without its challenges. From market saturation to transportation limitations, every obstacle requires innovative solutions. “The coal business is unique,” Kanungo explains. “Coal is called as dirty fuel” and every body is going for clean energy.   Replacing coal with clean energy in India is a critical goal for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and promoting sustainable development. However, this transition is complex and requires addressing several challenges, including technological, economic and social factors.

To survive and thrive amid the challenges posed by the global shift to clean energy OCPL, needs to adapt strategically. We have plans to  invest in renewable energy sources in future.

OCPL is exploring adoption of advanced technologies like CCUS to reduce its carbon footprint. By capturing CO2 emissions and utilizing them for commercial purposes (e.g., in fertilizers or concrete), the company can mitigate environmental impacts while continuing in coal operations. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy is gaining traction as an alternative fuel for power generation, heavy industry and transport. OCPL will explore developing green hydrogen production facilities and fuel cell-based power generation systems.

OCPL have adopted Sustainable Mining Practices in the Manoharpur Mines and have  focussed on better land reclamation, Miyawaki method for afforestation and ecosystem restoration  to offset the environmental impact of coal extraction. In future OCPL are going  to adopt more sustainable mining technologies such as robotic mining, which reduces environmental damage.

Kanungo’s leadership extends beyond business success to encompass a profound commitment to social upliftment. His efforts have transformed OCPL’s Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) colony into a national model, earning recognition as a pilot project by NABARD. “Empowering the youth in these colonies is a priority,” he shares. “We are focused on providing education and skills to make them self-reliant and responsible citizens. We’ve also made significant strides in combating alcohol addiction within the community.”

OCPL’s CSR projects include initiatives aimed at  complete, sustainable and inclusive welfare of all the stake holders.  “A motivated and happy team is the backbone of our success,” Kanungo believes. He considers OCPL as one family. His efforts underscore the importance of balancing corporate goals with community well-being.

Kanungo credits much of his outlook to inspiring figures such as IAS officer Shri Anil Swarup, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. “Their leadership and dedication have shaped my approach,” he says. “They have taught me to prioritize serving the greater good over personal gain.”

For the youth of Odisha, Kanungo offers this advice: “Dedicate yourself to the state and community. Don’t chase money—let your contributions define your success. Financial rewards will naturally follow when you make a positive impact.”

OCPL’s achievements under Kanungo’s guidance are numerous and noteworthy. The company’s 5-star rating from the Ministry of Coal for three consecutive years places it in an elite league. “This recognition is a testament to our commitment to excellence,” he asserts. The R&R colony has set a standard that has drawn attention nationwide, with organizations keen to replicate its success in their own operations.

Looking ahead, Kanungo has ambitious plans for OCPL. From acquiring additional coal mines to adopting sustainable practices, his vision revolves around strategic growth and innovation. “OCPL has the potential to be a trailblazer in India’s coal industry,” he asserts. “Our focus on operational efficiency, community engagement, and financial sustainability will pave the way for a brighter future.”

Kanungo’s vision extends beyond the professional realm. His personal goal is to create an environment where every member of the OCPL family thrives. “I want to ensure that our employees, stakeholders and community members all feel valued and supported,” he states. With a focus on reducing OCPL’s carbon footprint, he is also championing environmental sustainability. “Our goal is not just to grow as a company but to do so responsibly,” he emphasizes.

Through his visionary leadership, Ayaskant Kanungo is steering OCPL toward an innovative and sustainable future. His journey is not only a testament to professional excellence but also a source of inspiration for aspiring changemakers in the energy sector and beyond. By balancing ambition with accountability, he is redefining what it means to lead with purpose.
