Healing Beyond Boundaries: Dr. Alok Lodh

Chief Executive Officer, Sunshine Hospital, Bhubaneswar

FEATURE: In a healthcare landscape marked by rapid growth, shifting expectations, and widening gaps in access, Dr. Alok Lodh emerges as a rare leader—one who combines clinical wisdom with compassionate governance, international vision with local action. As the Chief Executive Officer of Sunshine Hospital in Bhubaneswar, he is not only steering one of Odisha’s fastest-growing healthcare institutions but also championing a model of care that is inclusive, technology-driven, and deeply human.

Born in the heart of Odisha, Dr. Lodh’s early grounding came from the prestigious S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack—one of the oldest and most respected medical institutions in the country. But it wasn’t just medicine that drew him in; it was the potential of healthcare as a tool for empowerment. This passion took him far beyond the confines of clinical practice, into the strategic and operational layers of healthcare systems across the world.

His global experience, especially during his time with the World Health Organisation, was transformative. Designing and implementing innovative primary healthcare strategies across multiple countries, Dr. Lodh developed a firm belief in healthcare equity. He became convinced that the real measure of a successful health system lies in how well it serves the most underserved. This shaped his lifelong mission: to create systems that work for everyone, especially the common man.

Over the course of a distinguished 34-year career, Dr. Lodh has played pivotal roles across India’s leading hospital networks. From heading Emergency and Medical Services at Fortis Group to serving in leadership positions at Primus Group (International), Jaypee Group, and HCL Healthcare, his work has consistently revolved around elevating the quality of care while expanding its reach. At each stop, he introduced systems, protocols, and patient-first cultures that turned healthcare institutions into patient-trusted brands.

When he returned to Odisha to take charge as Chief Operating Officer of Kalinga Hospital in 2017, he brought his national and global learnings home. Under his leadership, the hospital deepened its community outreach and became a key partner in implementing government-led health schemes. His ability to work hand-in-hand with policymakers, while ensuring world-class care delivery, made him a respected figure in both public and private circles.

His next challenge came with Utkal Hospital, a newly founded institution seeking to define itself in a competitive market. As CEO, Dr. Lodh led it with clarity and purpose, transforming it into one of the most trusted healthcare destinations in the state. It was a testament to his leadership that in just a short span, the hospital grew in stature, service capacity, and patient trust.

Currently at the helm of Sunshine Hospital in Bhubaneswar, Dr. Lodh is continuing his legacy of impact. Under his stewardship, Sunshine has emerged as a key healthcare partner under the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY Scheme, providing cutting-edge treatment to thousands of beneficiaries across Odisha. He has made technology adoption a cornerstone of the hospital’s operations while never losing sight of what matters most—the patient’s experience and dignity.

His contributions to the healthcare sector were officially recognized in 2018 when he received the prestigious Navratna Award from the state of Odisha. But awards, as those close to him know, are just a by-product of his deeper mission—to make quality healthcare accessible, affordable, and empathetic.

Outside of his professional realm, Dr. Lodh is a man of quiet passions and creative pursuits. An amateur wildlife photographer, he finds solace behind the lens, often capturing moments that mirror his own values—patience, precision, and presence. He has also collaborated with UNICEF on a book centered on children in India, reflecting his enduring commitment to social issues beyond hospitals.

His personal life is equally inspiring. His wife, Parul, is a passionate connoisseur of Indian handlooms, deeply rooted in the cultural and artistic heritage of the country. Their son, Hriday, is charting his own creative journey in design and graphics at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad—one of the most prestigious design institutions in Asia.

Dr. Alok Lodh’s journey is more than a timeline of achievements. It is a story of purpose-driven leadership, of bridging the worlds of policy and practice, and of nurturing institutions that don’t just treat illness but restore hope. His life continues to remind us that true healthcare leadership is not about scale or numbers—it’s about impacting lives with integrity, empathy, and vision.
