Namita Tappo, the international Odia Hockey player, was honoured with the prestigious award- 28th Ekalabya Puraskar 2020 for her exceptional performance at the National and International platform. Along with a citation she received a cash award of 5 Lakh rupees.
The event was organized in a low key manner as due to the strict guidelines of COVID-19 guidelines. Namita is an outstanding performer both in the national and international level. She was awarded due to her extraordinary performance at the ace hockey player between 1st April 2018 and 31st March 2020. She is an international player and has represented India in every international tournament that includes Rio Olympics 2016.
Tappo is also an experienced midfielder where she is credited to spearheading numerous trophies for Indian National Hockey team at international level.
Along with Namita, two other weightlifter- weightlifter Sneha Soren and International Badminton player Rutaparna Panda were also felicitated. They got a cheque of 50000 each for their incredible contribution to the field of sports.
The Ekalabya Award committee had jury members which was drawn from different walks of life had unanimously selected her for the coveted honour. Baijayant Panda, former MP (Lok Sabha) and Trustee of IMPaCT were presented through the ceremony’s virtual mode. He stated that IMPact had been a continuous pursuit to recognize and foster excellence in sports fields.
The Ekalabya Awards was instituted in 1993 and is one of the most prestigious honours along with other sports awards at the national level. Even the award has helped out to bring out the self-confidence and support to the sportspersons.
