BHUBANESWAR: In recent years, the concept of corpus funds has gained significant traction in India, drawing inspiration from practices in the West. This trend has seen a growing number of philanthropists and entrepreneurs stepping forward to support their alma maters, recognizing the critical role these institutions play in shaping future generations. Among these visionary donors is Dr. Krishna Chivukula, a distinguished business leader whose generosity is set to make a lasting impact on higher education in India.
Dr. Chivukula, a name that resonates with success both in India and the West, recently made headlines with his monumental donation of ₹228 crore to IIT Madras, his alma mater. This act of philanthropy is not just a gesture of gratitude but a deliberate effort to promote affordable higher education in India. “Donations make me happy; the happier you are, the healthier you are,” Dr. Chivukula remarked, emphasizing the personal fulfilment that comes with giving back.
He strongly believes that quality education should be accessible to all, regardless of economic background, and sees his contribution as a way to ensure that children from underprivileged families can pursue their academic dreams.
Dr. Chivukula’s educational journey began with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors from IIT Bombay in 1968. He went on to earn an M.Tech. in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Madras in 1970 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1980. These institutions provided the foundation for his remarkable career, which began as an engineer in the USA and culminated in his becoming the first Indian to serve as Group President and Chief Executive Officer of a major conglomerate at the age of 37.
By the time he was 42, Dr. Chivukula had transitioned into a successful entrepreneur, making significant strides in the fields of chemistry, engineering, and material science. Today, he is the owner and Chairman of the Board of Directors of several companies, including INDO US MIM TEC Private Limited, Shiva Analyticals (India) Private Limited, and Advanced Analytical Testing Laboratories, Inc., USA.
His recent donation to IIT Madras is not just a financial contribution but a strategic investment in the future of education in India. The funds will be allocated to various initiatives, as outlined by Prof. V. Kamakoti, who expressed profound gratitude for Dr. Chivukula’s generosity.
These initiatives include the establishment of the Krishna Chivukula Fellowship, the Krishna Chivukula International Fellowship, and the Krishna Chivukula Sports Fellowship for both men and women. A portion of the donation will also support high-risk research projects and contribute to “Shaastra Magazine,” furthering the dissemination of scientific knowledge.
Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean of IIT Madras, also acknowledged the significance of this donation, calling on all alumni to support their alma maters. He proudly highlighted that IIT Madras has raised approximately ₹1,200 crore from corporate and alumni contributions over the past six years, with Dr. Chivukula’s donation standing out as the single largest from an individual.
In a statement reflecting his ongoing commitment to education, Dr. Chivukula mentioned his intention to make a similar donation to IIT Bombay in the future. His vision is clear: to elevate Indian institutions to world-class standards while ensuring that education remains within reach for all.
