Talking to Dr. Arathy K Nair

The importance of Psychologists has always been talked about in a highly populated country like India. The role of a Psychologist in a developing country is many. They are not only required to heal or manage psychological issues but also to balance them. In the Inspiring Awards 2023, we would be talking about Psychologists and their contribution to the society . Not to forget Dr. Arathy K Nair is an amazing author apart from being a psychologist. Without further delay lets get on to her interview.

Q1) Dr. Arathy , Welcome to our platform . Tell us about when did you decide to become a psychologist ?

Ans: I happened to read a book named “Manassariyum Yanthram” (A Machine that Understands the Mind) written by the eminent author P. Narendranath at a very young age. Since then, I have become very inquisitive about how the mind works. I was curious about why people behave the way they do. Several famous Malayalam movies, such as Manichithrathazhu, Ulladakkam, Thaalavattom, and Thaniavarthanam, played a significant role in sparking these thoughts during my growing-up stage.

I must say that these well-known movies fuelled my curiosity. I grew up as a silent analyst, where my analyses were mostly shared and discussed with my father, a very insightful person, and a few of my intimate friends during that time. After completing my Pre-Degree, when it was time to decide the next phase of my educational life, I pondered over my interests, what I would excel at, and, more importantly, what I wanted to contribute to both myself and society.

This contemplation led me to consider Psychology as a subject where I could make a meaningful impact on the betterment of society. I delved into learning and researching more about it, and my passion for the field grew over time. Since the age of 17/18 until today, I have tightly embraced Psychology into my life. For me, it is not just a subject or a profession; it’s an emotion that courses through my very breath.

Q2) With great powers comes in great responsibility. What is the most difficult part of being a psychologist nowadays ?

Ans : Being a psychologist entails a significant responsibility and several challenges accompany this role such as

Emotional Baggage:

Dealing with the emotional struggles of clients can be emotionally draining & exhausting for psychologists if not handled wisely. Empathizing and assisting them in finding solutions to various life concerns is a strenuous process. Psychologists essentially immerse themselves in the experiences of their clients, reflecting upon the same emotions and feelings daily. Achieving a great emotional and psychological balance is crucial when facing such cases regularly.

 Diversity of Issues:

Psychologists often encounter a wide range of psychological issues, spanning from mental health disorders to interpersonal conflicts. Managing this breadth of challenges necessitates continuous learning and adaptability.

Ethical Dilemmas:

Navigating ethical considerations in complex situations can be challenging for psychologists. Adhering to ethical standards while addressing client confidentiality and well-being often requires making difficult decisions.

Stigma, Misconceptions, and Advocacy:

Despite progress, there remains a considerable societal stigma attached to seeking mental health support. Psychologists may encounter challenges in breaking down these barriers and promoting mental health awareness. Feeling a responsibility to contribute to systemic change, psychologists advocate for improved mental health policies and address societal issues impacting mental health—a demanding yet crucial aspect of the profession.

Continuous Professional Development:

Staying updated with the latest research, therapeutic techniques, and field changes is a constant demand. The requirement for continuous learning is both interesting and challenging, given the fast-paced nature of advancements in psychology.

Balancing Empathy and Objectivity:

Striking the right balance between empathizing with clients and maintaining professional objectivity can be difficult for psychologists. Providing support while ensuring they do not become overly involved emotionally is a delicate equilibrium.

Self-Care:

Practising self-care is vital for psychologists, but finding the time and means to prioritize their well-being amid demanding schedules and emotional challenges can be challenging.

Despite these difficulties, psychologists generally find their work deeply rewarding, contributing to positive changes and transformation in individuals’ lives while advocating for improved mental health on a broader scale.

Q3) A lot of children going to school do face several mental health issues but people neglect it thinking as a phase of their life. Any message you have for the parents and teachers who regularly deal with a large number of kids ?

Ans :Absolutely, addressing the mental health of children is crucial, and parents and teachers play pivotal roles in supporting their well-being.  Recognizing and addressing the mental health of children is of much importance. While it’s common for kids to experience various phases in their lives, it’s equally crucial not to dismiss persistent signs of mental health issues. As psychologists, we understand the impact that early intervention and support can have on a child’s well-being.

Here are some key points to consider:

Open Communication:

Encourage open and honest communication with children. Create a safe space where they feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment.

Be Attentive:

Pay attention to changes in behaviour, mood, or academic performance. Sudden shifts may indicate underlying issues that require understanding and support.

Educate Yourself:

Familiarize yourself with common signs of mental health issues in children. Awareness is the first step toward early intervention.

Collaborate with Professionals:

Work collaboratively with mental health professionals if you observe persistent concerns. Psychologists can provide valuable insights and strategies to support the child’s well-being.

Promote Mental Health Education:

Advocate for mental health education in schools. Creating awareness among students, parents, and teachers helps reduce stigma and encourages a supportive environment.

Breaking the Stigma:

Actively challenge and break the stigma surrounding mental health. Encourage open discussions, share personal experiences when appropriate, and promote understanding that seeking help is a sign of strength.

 Prioritize Self-Care:

Recognize that your well-being is crucial in supporting children effectively. Take care of your mental health, seek support when needed, and model healthy coping mechanisms.

Build a Supportive Community:

Foster a community that prioritizes mental health. Encourage discussions, share resources, and create an atmosphere where seeking help is viewed positively.

Remember, mental health challenges are not just a phase; they require understanding, compassion, and proactive efforts. By working together and breaking the stigma, we can create environments that nurture the emotional well-being of every child
