Out of 225 cases, the Odisha Crime Branch has only succeeded in securing 10 convictions. According to Tusharkanti Behera, minister of state for home, only 10 of the 225 cases that the Odisha Crime Branch looked at during the previous ten years resulted in convictions. Behera informed the House that despite the conclusion of the 11 cases’ trials, 10 of the accused had been found guilty by the CB. Tusharkanti Behera, the minister of state for home, spoke to the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Monday on incidents it looked into in the previous ten years.
The State Forensic Science Laboratory in Bhubaneswar has a polygraph testing facility, but it does not have a narco test option, the minister further informed the Assembly. In a similar vein, the Minister informed the Legislature that 597 persons may have passed away in various jails and police stations around Odisha during the course of ten years. In response to BJD member and Khandapada Legislator Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, the minister stated that between 2013 and 2022, 200 convicts and 346 people who were awaiting trial died in various jails, while 51 people died while in police custody.According to reports, 11 convicts and 35 UTPs died in 2013, and the numbers increased to 24 and 49, respectively, in 2022, according to the ministry.He said that 78 convicts passed away in total in just 2020.
