India’s New Warship Mahendragiri To Be Launched On Sept 1

On September 1, India’s newest battleship, Mahendragiri, will be unveiled here. Sudesh Dhankhar, the wife of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, will do the honors at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, according to a release from the Indian Navy. The seventh and final stealth frigate of Project 17A is Mahendragiri. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), both in Kolkata, are each building four warships.

The Navy’s capabilities are greatly enhanced because a warship’s launch signifies an important turning point in its construction because it means the ship is now prepared to make its first appearance in the water. Vindhyagiri, the sixth Project 17A battleship, was unveiled earlier this month at GRSE by President Droupadi Murmu.

Project 17A’s preceding five warships were launched between 2019 and 2022. “The launch of Mahendragiri is an apt testament to the incredible progress our nation has made in building a self-reliant naval force,” the Indian Navy said in a statement. The Project 17A (Shivalik class) frigates, which are the successors of Project 17, have enhanced stealth capabilities, cutting-edge weaponry and sensors, and platform-management systems.

The Navy anticipates receiving all Project 17A vessels between 2024 and 2026 at various levels of completion.
