Is Parental pressure leading to suicides in India?

The Supreme Court has ruled that parents, not schools, should bear the responsibility for placing excessive pressure on their kids in entry coaching hotspots like Kota, Rajasthan, where student suicide rates are high. The case seeking regulation of private coaching institutes was being heard by the highest court.A division bench made up of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti noted these things on Monday during a hearing over a plea to regulate private coaching centres.

“One cannot hold Kota’s coaching institutes accountable. Students are terminating their life because parents are placing excessive pressure on them in a highly competitive setting, according to Bench.
The bench acknowledged the fierce competition and the necessity for students to turn to these coaching centres in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Dr. Aniruddha Narayan Malpani, who sought the regulation of coaching institutes due to the rising number of student suicides in Kota.

Justice Khanna emphasised the difficulties that educational institutions encounter as well as the competitive environment that drives students to enrol in these programmes. It was mentioned that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2020 data showed that 8.2 percent of student suicides happened in the nation. The bench suggested that the petitioner submit their recommendations to the government, but acknowledged that it was unable to provide orders in this area. Consequently, Priya, the petitioner, requested that the court allow her to withdraw the plea so that she may speak with the proper authorities.
