New Delhi, October 5: Bollywood actor Janhvi Kapoor has publicly condemned a manipulated AI-generated video involving footage from her popular song Chuttamalle from Devara: Part 1, after the clip began circulating online and triggering widespread discussion about the misuse of artificial intelligence.

The actor described the circulation of the manipulated content without her consent as “deeply violating”, arguing that the problem goes beyond one particular video. She highlighted a larger concern surrounding digitally manipulated images and videos of women, particularly when technology is used to sexualise or objectify them without permission. India Today

The controversy has quickly moved beyond Bollywood and into the wider debate over AI-generated deepfakes, consent and digital safety. Janhvi also acknowledged the support she received from people in the film industry, including her Devara co-star Jr NTR. Other celebrities have also criticised the circulation of such manipulated material and called for greater responsibility in the use of AI. NDTV

The incident comes at a time when generative AI tools are becoming increasingly accessible. While the technology is being used for filmmaking, education, advertising and creative production, its misuse has created a growing problem involving fake celebrity videos, fabricated photographs and digitally altered personal content.

Janhvi’s response has therefore struck a wider chord. Her central argument is that technological capability cannot replace basic principles of consent, dignity and personal control over one’s image.

The controversy also raises difficult questions for social-media platforms. Once manipulated content goes viral, removing the original upload may not be enough because copies can quickly appear across multiple accounts and platforms.

For India, the episode is another reminder that the country’s rapid adoption of AI is happening alongside a growing need for stronger digital-literacy and safety measures.
