According to Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar, over 97% of cellphones sold in India currently are domestically produced, compared to 90% imports in 2014.

On Friday, the minister went to Chengalpattu, south of Chennai, to witness the opening of a new mobile phone manufacturing facility owned by Taiwanese electronics giant Pegatron. He told News18 that in order to attract investment and create jobs in industries like electronics, state governments should actively participate in central government projects.

Regarding the government’s “internet for all” initiative, Chandrasekhar assured the audience that “we will bring all 120 crore Indians online by 2025-26 on behalf of the Government of India.” 80 billion Indians use the internet today. We’ll create an open, secure, trustworthy, and accountable internet.
