Making A Mark In The Corporate World, Sashibhushan Upadhyay, VP, Jindal Stainless Limited

Shashibhushan Upadhyay is a man of excellence and vision. In his illustrious career of 29 years, he has versatile experience in the steel industry. Mr. Upadhyay drives towards results and has been a decisive leader handling multiple projects. He has proven ultimate success in almost three decades of his professional career in various projects he handled.

Shashibhushan Upadhyay is a master of corporate strategy and has a cent-percent track record of excelling in dynamic and challenging circumstances. He is currently holding the most respected post of Resident Director of Jindal Stainless Limited & the Whole-time Director of Jindal Coke Limited.

Shashibhushan Upadhyayis a member of many reputed business forums and has held some reputable positions too. So far, Mr.Upadhyay’sprofessional journey and the post he held is as under:

Before his stint in Jindal Stainless and Jindal Coke Limited, Shashibhushan Upadhyay also played some major roles in his previous work field. In his earlier professional career, Mr. Upadhyay led several projects in the role of Head Group Logistics, Head Commercials, and Head Operations.

 Jindal Stainless Limited (January 2007- Till Date)

Among the top 10 in the world, India’s largest stainless steel manufacturers have mines to mint approach through backward and forward integration.

Vice President & Resident Director (October 2015- Till Date)

  • Responsible for operations and compliance of 1.1MTPA stainless steel plant and chromite mines to ensure profitability.
  • Directing the expansion strategy for Integrated Steel Plant, from concept to commissioning, with an estimated investment of INR 8000 Cr.
  • Spearheading negotiations and finalizations at multiple fronts, including –
    • 2MTPA Iron is making complex, including a Blast Furnace, a Sinter plant, a Pellet Plant, and a Gas Holder
    • 1.1MTPA Stainless steel melt shop
    • Carbon steel SMS along with a Lime Plant and an Oxygen Plant.
  • Orchestrating the entire execution end to end, including cash flow management.
  • Forging strategic partnerships, navigating new opportunities, and participation in auctions.
  • Evaluation of stressed assets and strategy for acquisition.
  • Fostering the development of underground mining for Chromite Ore.
  • Managing all External Relations and liaison with all stakeholders.
  • Overseen restructuring and demerger activities. Securing all statutory clearances, including approvals for new projects.
  • Handling of all legal issues

Whole Time Director (Jindal Coke Limited)

  • JCL produces metallurgical-grade Coke, COG, and Coal Tar from 0.43MTPA Coke Oven Plant & having turnover of around INR 1000 Cr
  • Played an instrumental role in the turnaround story. Transformed JCL from a loss-making entity into a profitable company.
  • Executing expansion plans to double the capacity with an investment of INR 450 Cr.

Head Projects, Commercial and Group Logistics (January 2007- October 2015)

  • Conceptualized and developed expansion strategies for overseas projects in Russia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
  • Assessed the greenfield opportunities and provided recommendations with risk profiling based on the business model.
  • Successfully commissioned India’s largest Stainless Steel Plant within a challenging timeframe.
  • Handled execution, commercial and financial aspects of this INR 6500 Cr project.
  • Took over as Head Commercial in addition to Projects, to manage following functions:
    • Raw material planning and procurement (including MRO)
    • Inventory control and management
    • Indirect taxation
    • Cashflow management
    • Logistics
    • Contracts management
    • Information Technology
    • Liaison with various stakeholders
  • Joined back as Head of Projects and Group Logistics function which included:
    • Handling inbound and outbound logistics.
    • Contract management
    • Port operations (handled imports of 4000 and exports of 1200 containers/month)
    • Commissioning and stabilization of Railway siding operations.
  • Successfully operationalized various de-bottlenecking projects, resulting in the turnaround of the company’s performance.

Kalyani Steel Limited (November 2013- Feb 2014)

  • A brief stint as Head of Projects

 Ispat Industries Limited (August 1997 – Jan 2007)

  • Senior Manager, responsible for handling a team of 200 employees, which included 60 qualified engineers
  • The Steel Melt Shop team that achieved world record production from Con Arc Furnaces Handled various areas like Projects, Commissioning, and Operations.

Rajinder Steels Limited (March 1995- August 1997)

  • Assistant Manager (Operations)
  • Commissioned EAF and LF, as the youngest shift in-charge

Indian Seamless Steels & Alloys Limited (July 1992- Feb 1995)

  • Engineer (operations)
  • Led the team for erection and commissioning of Vacuum Degassing Unit and commissioned the equipment as the first equipment of the plant.
