What is the Message for National Politics?

Yesterday West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at his residence in Bhubaneswar. Officially, it was a courtesy meeting, but from the political point of view, the meeting has set the rumor mills abuzz on national politics. The timing of Mamata Banerjee meeting Naveen is most important. Mamata Banerjee is now sticking to the plan of forming a third front, maintaining both equidistance from Congress and the BJP. To strengthen her presence in national politics, she is playing a different ball game where regional parties would set their own national agenda. It is absolutely not possible for all the anti-BJP forces to form a unified front to fight the upcoming general elections against the ruling party. The regional parties are not keen to go for a pre- poll alliance, rather they are looking forward to post-election opportunities.

Before meeting Naveen, Mamata Banerjee has already met former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav. A kind of pre-election agreement has reached between the Samajwadi Party of Uttar Pradesh, Bharat Rashtra Samiti of Telangana and the Trinamool of West Bengal. These three parties are no way going to compete against each other and are not likely to contest elections as rivals.

Numerically, these three Lok Sabha seats in the state have the potential to change the equation in national politics. The number of Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Telangana are 139. If Odisha’s 21 seats are added, the total number goes up to 160. If these parties cooperate one another and win good number of seats, then the reins of forming the government will be in their hands after the 2024 elections. Since none of them are against each other, a compromise based on post-poll realities can be possible between them.

The Mamata-Akhilesh-Rao alliance wants to keep itself in the role of “King Maker” regardless of whether the Congress or the BJP wins. If Naveen cooperates with them, the position is likely to be strengthened. In that regard, Mamata-Naveen’s meeting has a special significance keep in view the 2024 elections.

Aam Aadmi Party

Aam Aadmi Party and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena are also under the leadership of Mamata. Meanwhile, the AAP has expanded its presence in Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab and Uttarakhand. Along with this, Mamata is in touch with Sharad Pawar and Nitish Kumar who support Congress in terms of necessity. After the Karnataka assembly elections, other parties will think about the issue of global alliance after monitoring the opinion of Congress. However, there is almost no possibility of pre-election agreement between the Congress and the regional parties at the national level.

Alliance

Mamata, KCR and Naveen will now try to expand their influence as an “alliance”. After the Mamata- Naveen meeting, this alliance will get some kind of moral strength. Even though both sides may remain silent from the political point of view, but the speculations over this meeting have already gathered steam in the national politics.
