A suspension bridge fell on the Machhu river in the Gujarati town of Morbi, leaving up to 135 dead unaccounted for, 180 people rescued, and much more unaccounted for as of Monday morning. According to officials, the search effort will probably go on for another 24 hours.
On Monday, Morbi Town will voluntarily observe a bandh in remembrance of those lost in the disaster. The search effort now includes around 200 jawans from the Army, Navy, NDRF, SDRF, neighbourhood fire brigade teams, as well as civilian divers and swimmers.
The contractor and management who refurbished the suspension bridge will face criminal charges, according to Gujarat’s State Minister for Home, Harsh Sanghavi. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established by the government to look into the suspension bridge collapse.
