Nestlé India Invests ₹900 Crore in Odisha for First Eastern India Factory, Promising Jobs and Growth

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark move that signals growing confidence in Odisha’s industrial potential, Nestlé India has launched its first manufacturing facility in eastern India with a substantial investment of ₹900 crore. The new factory, to be located in the Khordha district, marks Nestlé’s tenth production unit in the country and is a major boost to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The factory will focus on producing Nestlé’s popular prepared dishes and cooking aids portfolio, including household names like Maggi noodles, seasonings, and ready-to-cook mixes. Strategically placed near emerging consumption hubs in the eastern and northeastern regions, the Khordha facility is expected to drastically reduce logistics costs and delivery timelines, while also enabling quicker, locally adapted product innovations.

This investment is a significant step towards decentralizing Nestlé’s manufacturing operations, which until now relied heavily on supply chains extending from western and southern India. The Odisha unit is part of a broader strategy to align production with regional demand and to support the development of under-served markets.

More than a manufacturing unit, the new facility is poised to be a transformative force for Odisha’s economy. It is expected to generate several thousand direct and indirect employment opportunities, with a strong focus on youth and women’s inclusion. While official staffing details are yet to be announced, media reports suggest that the company may adopt a workforce model similar to its Sanand facility in Gujarat, where over 60 percent of employees are women. This could be a significant step in promoting gender diversity and inclusive development in the region.

The project also aligns with Odisha’s Food Processing Policy and promises to integrate local agri-value chains and support the state’s MSME sector. By sourcing raw materials such as spices, flour, and packaging supplies locally, Nestlé is set to boost rural livelihoods and establish a strong ecosystem of regional suppliers.

Sustainability is another cornerstone of this investment. Company officials have indicated that the facility will incorporate energy-efficient technologies, water conservation systems, and eco-friendly infrastructure, in line with Nestlé’s global commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

This development not only marks a major milestone for Nestlé but also sets a precedent for other multinational corporations to invest in eastern India. With lower land and labour costs, improving infrastructure, and proactive government policies, Odisha is fast emerging as a hub for large-scale manufacturing and industrial innovation.
