NewsClick Case: Delhi Police To File Over 9,000 Page Charge Sheet

In the NewsClick case, Delhi Police is expected to present a charge sheet to this court on Saturday that is expected to run over 9,000 pages. The sources informed IANS that the charge sheet purportedly contains information regarding seized electronic devices and that a substantial amount of money was utilized to destabilize the nation through news articles. On October 3, 2018, Delhi Police detained Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and editor-in-chief of NewsClick, and Amit Chakravarty, the head of the company’s HR department, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on suspicion of receiving funding for “pro-China propaganda.” NewsClick refutes the accusations.

Approximately 480 electronic gadgets were taken by the police during a raid. Under the UAPA, the police have brought charges against Prabir Purkayastha. On August 17, 2023, the NewsClick founder was the subject of a formal complaint. In October, there were many raids on its property. According to sources, NewsClick is accused of receiving funding from overseas totaling about Rs 38 crore. Neville Roy Singham, an American billionaire, is accused in the FIR of regularly supporting NewsClick.

In an article titled “A US Tech Mogul Linked to a Global Web of Chinese Propaganda,” which appeared in The New York Times on August 5, it was claimed that the news portal NewsClick was a part of a global network that received funding from American millionaire Singham, who was allegedly closely connected to Chinese government media.

Citing the NYT report, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur asserted that Congress, China, and NewsClick had an “anti-India umbilical cord” and were pushing the agenda of the Communist Party of China through the website. After the NYT report, NewsClick issued a statement two days later, denying the allegations as baseless and lacking factual or legal support.
