During the last ten years, from 2014–15 to 2024–25 (until February 2025), the Odisha government has collected Rs 6,595.55 crore in taxes from the sale of pan masala, gutkha, tobacco, and related products. In the current fiscal year alone, the state has earned Rs 1,047.82 crore from these products up until February, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said in a written response to a question posed by BJP MLA Tankadhar Tripathy from Jharsuguda in the State Assembly today.
Despite persistent public health concerns about their usage, Majhi also disclosed that these items are being purchased from 16 states in the nation, and the consistent rise in tax revenues is indicative of the increasing sale and use of these products in Odisha.
