‘Odisha Millets Mission’ & ‘Mo Upakari Bagicha,’ which is implemented by Agriculture and Farmer’s Empowerment and Women & Child Development and Mission Shakti departments, have featured in NITI Aayog’s report. This Odisha Government’s flagship programs were highlighted as the success stories in the title Health & Nutrition Practice Insights’ of NITI Aayog’s recent report.
The NITI Aayog revealed that the two programs have helped enhance the dietary diversity among women and children and accomplish their nutritional needs in the State. The officials revealed that NITI Aayog has also suggested other States to implement such profitable programs.
In 2017 the Odisha Government launched Odisha Millet Mission to encourage farmers towards multi-cropping by growing millet production in the State and widespread use of millets in food for assuring nutrition.
In Integrated Child Development Programme, Midday Meal Scheme and Public Distribution System were launched to benefit the children. Even several other programs were established for the increase of millet production and increase markets for millet.
In 2019 ‘Mo Upakari Bagicha’ was launched in cooperation with the Women & Child Development department. Apart from that, the Odisha Livelihood Mission and Agriculture & Farmers’ Development department was established to provide high nutrition food for equivalent nutrition to malnourished children, adolescent girls, and critical pregnant women.
Even proper arrangements are made to ensure nutrition is given to the pre-school children at Anganwadi centers by providing seasonal vegetables and fruits. 17,000 ‘Mo Upakari Bagicha’ have been created in different Anganwadi centers, and the program has been dramatically successful in tackling malnutrition in rural areas.
