Odisha To Repeal More Than 200 Obsolete Laws In Budget Session Next Year


More than 206 old and obsolete acts that were passed between 1976 and 2016 will be repealed. The Odisha cabinet has approved the suggestions to repeal these laws.

As per Shashikant Mishra, Principal Secretary of Law department, 33 departments in Odisha were asked to make a list of outdated laws that can be repealed. The initial list of 699 laws has been decided to repeal 206 laws in the first phase. After the State Law Commission recommended for their repeal, the Cabinet approved it. The laws would be abolished through Odisha Repealing Bill 2021 to be moved in the Budget session of the Assembly.

As per the reports, the 206 acts and laws that Odisha Repealing Bill 2021 in its inclination of doing away are the Odisha Motor Spirit (Taxationon sales) Amendment Act, 1974, Odisha Entertainment Tax (Amendment)Act, 1975, Odisha Electricity Duty (Amendment) Act, 2010, Orissa Police Amendment Act, 1976 — which regulates black-marketing in cinema halls — and Orissa Police Amendment Act, 1975 – which made it legally responsible for people of an area to pay the fine if they failed to give appropriate aid in case of damage of property — have also become irrelevant.

According to the National daily Orissa Prevention of Gambling Act, 1955, will also be repealed.
