Feature: When most people think of a surgeon, they imagine a man in scrubs, working silently in the operating theatre, saving lives one procedure at a time. But for Dr. Biswajit Mohapatra, surgery is just one part of his larger purpose. A healer, educator, motivator, and visionary, he is on a relentless mission to redefine what healthcare truly means. At JP Hospital, Rourkela, where he serves as Senior Consultant Surgeon and Chairman Global Self-Healthcare Education and Research Trust, he has combined his decades of surgical expertise with an unshakable belief that hospitals should not function as faceless corporations but as nurturing “CORP-HOMEs”—places that are affordable, self-sufficient, and compassionate to patients, doctors, and administrators alike.
His career journey began in 1996 in Bharuch, Gujarat, where at just 29 years of age, he independently set up the General Surgery Department at Trust Hospital. A year later, he did the same at Manibennagar Bai Charitable Hospital in Vapi, before returning to his hometown of Rourkela in 1998. At Vesaj Patel Hospital, he went on to serve for 22 years as the sole surgeon, expanding the facility into a 100-bed hospital and developing its surgery unit into a fully operational laparoscopic center. With minimal resources, he built one of the most trusted surgical departments in the region, multiplying hospital revenue twentyfold and cementing his reputation as a doctor who could deliver both medical excellence and institutional growth.
In 2019, he joined JP Hospital, Rourkela, a 306-bed multispeciality institution, taking on the dual responsibility of Senior Consultant Surgeon and Chairman Global Self-Healthcare Education and Research Trust. His contributions there have been transformative, from streamlining procurement and establishing SOPs to initiating the NABH accreditation process. Perhaps his most defining achievement has been introducing DNB postgraduate programs in six disciplines—General Surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and Ophthalmology—within just three years of the hospital’s inception, a milestone that positioned JP Hospital as a hub for academic excellence.
Yet Dr. Mohapatra’s influence extends beyond the hospital walls. A certified NLP trainer and India’s first Health Motivator, he designs unique training modules such as “One Step Forward,” equipping doctors, paramedics, and healthcare managers with leadership, communication, and life skills. His health education programs—like Practicing Self-Healthcare, DNA of Living Healthy, and Blueprint for Living Healthy—have been adopted by institutions including NIT Rourkela, where one has even become a credited academic subject. As a speaker, he has inspired audiences across India, from IIT Goa and Gujarat Sports University to Rotary International and the Brahma Kumaris at Mount Abu.

His leadership is also reflected in community service. Twice elected President of the IMA Rourkela City Branch, President of Rotary Club of Rourkela Royal, and Honorary Secretary of the Pushpanjali Cancer Foundation, he has consistently merged medicine with social responsibility. His contributions have been recognized through honors such as Rotary International’s Best President Award (2011–12), the Best Branch President Award by IMA Odisha (2011–12), and the Indi-Author Championship (2022, Second Runner-up). As an author, his book Care for Your Health has reached a wide readership, empowering people with practical guidance on wellness and preventive care.
For Dr. Mohapatra, health is not just the absence of illness but the presence of awareness, leadership, and empowerment. From pioneering laparoscopic surgery in Rourkela to shaping JP Hospital into an academic force, from being a surgeon who worked tirelessly for decades to an educator who trains minds, his journey embodies a rare balance of dedication and vision. True to the title, Dr. Biswajit Mohapatra is indeed a man with a mission—one that redefines healthcare as a space of healing, learning, and human connection.
