BHUBANESWAR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that Port Blair, the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will now be known as “Sri Vijaya Puram.” Shah explained that the decision reflects the central government’s commitment to “free the nation from colonial imprints” and was inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Shah made the announcement through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he highlighted the symbolic importance of the renaming. “The previous name had a colonial legacy, while the new name, Sri Vijaya Puram, symbolizes the victory achieved in our struggle for freedom,” Shah wrote. He also underscored the historical significance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which were once a naval base for the Chola Empire and later became a critical part of India’s freedom struggle.
“Andaman & Nicobar Islands have an unparalleled place in our freedom struggle and history. The island territory that once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire is today poised to be the critical base for our strategic and development aspirations,” Shah added.
The renaming is not just a symbolic move but also a tribute to the sacrifices of Indian freedom fighters, many of whom were imprisoned in the infamous Cellular Jail located in Port Blair. Shah emphasized the historical connection, stating, “It is also the place that hosted the first unfurling of our Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji and also the cellular jail in which Veer Savarkar Ji and other freedom fighters struggled for an independent nation.”
The announcement was widely welcomed by senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other officials. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support, calling it a move that honors the rich history and heroic spirit of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. “The name Sri Vijaya Puram reflects our commitment to break free from the colonial mindset and celebrate our heritage,” PM Modi posted on X.
Several other prominent political figures also lauded the decision. Union Health Minister JP Nadda stated that the new name is a tribute to the resilience of the freedom fighters who battled against colonial oppression. “Every mention of Sri Vijaya Puram will now serve as a tribute to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters,” Nadda said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called it a “historic day” and emphasized that the renaming is a step towards reconnecting with India’s cultural roots. Similarly, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami praised the move, with Dhami stating that it highlights the historical importance and glorious traditions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
