BHUBANESWAR: Odisha FC will kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign with a challenging encounter against two-time champions Chennaiyin FC on Saturday. Sergio Lobera’s side, eager for a strong start, will look to capitalize on their home advantage, but Chennaiyin have historically proven to be a tough opponent.

The two teams have faced off 10 times since 2019, with an even record of three wins each, while four matches ended in draws. Last season, both sides secured one victory apiece. Odisha clinched a 2-0 win at the Kalinga Stadium, courtesy of goals from Jerry Mawihmingthanga and Diego Mauricio.

Looking ahead to the new season, Odisha FC has bolstered their squad with key signings such as Hugo Boumous, Rahim Ali, Rohit Kumar, and Saviour Gama. Raynier Fernandes also returns to the club for a second stint, adding depth to the team. Odisha finished fourth last season but fell short in the semi-finals, making them eager to improve on that performance. With four of their first five matches at home, coach Lobera is eyeing a strong start to their title challenge.

“We signed some players trying to be stronger, but we are preparing the game as always, being loyal to our style of play,” Lobera said ahead of the clash. “It’s more about how we play, how we attack, and how we defend.”

Chennaiyin FC, led by head coach Owen Coyle, are equally determined to make a positive start, even though their campaign begins away from home. The Scot emphasized that his team will aim for nothing less than victory.

“We’re not going to settle for a draw; we go to win. It will be a tough match, of course, but we’re excited for it. May the best team win,” Coyle said.

Chennaiyin has also made several exciting signings, including Mandar Rao Desai, Kiyan Nassiri, Wilmar Jordan, and Elsinho, giving Coyle options across the pitch. The coach believes that competition for places will drive the players to push themselves harder throughout the season.

“This season, we have players who can come in and change the game. It creates greater competition for places, which is crucial,” Coyle noted. “When there’s competition, players push themselves harder because ultimately, it’s their performances that earn them a place in the team—if you play well, you stay in the team.”

With both teams hungry for success, the clash promises to be an exciting and fiercely contested battle as the new ISL season gets underway.
