Twitter will make US Presidential-elect Joe Biden’s @POTUS account and @WhiteHouse account to a fresh start from zero followers. This will be done once Mr Biden will swear in as the next US President on 20th January 2021.

Rob Flaherty, Biden’s digital director in a quote to the media report stated that the social media platforms would not be transferring the existing accounts as POTUS and @WhiteHouse followers to the new administration. Where @POTUS currently has 33.2 million followers, @TheWhiteHouse has 26 million followers on Twitter.

As per the reports, this decision taken for Mr Biden officials accounts is the complete appositive of what happened to the Trump administration time when he took over the accounts from the Obama administration.

The report stated that-  “Back then, Twitter essentially duplicated the existing accounts, creating an archive of Obama-era tweets and followers and building a new set of accounts for the incoming administration that retained all of those followers without any of the tweets.”

According to Twitter, the accounts for @VP, @FLOTUS, @PressSec, @Cabinet, and @LaCasaBlanca will also have their followers gone. The Twitter official informed that this is an ongoing discussion with the Biden transition team on several aspects related to White House account transfers.

Earlier the company informed that all existing tweets on those accounts would be archived and it will transfer the accounts — reset to zero tweets — to Biden.

Whereas Donald Trump’s @POTUS account will be renamed @POTUS45 and “frozen as-is” and he will be in control of @realDonaldTrump, although with fewer protections than before.

From 20th January onwards, Trump will lose special privileges on Twitter, and his tweets will be treated like any other user.
