Veteran television actor Ram Kapoor, known for iconic shows like Kasamh Se and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, recently shed light on the financial journey of television stars and how a successful run in the industry can lead to long-term wealth — if managed wisely.
In a candid interview with Humans of Bombay, Kapoor revealed that while television initially offers meager pay and grueling schedules, consistent success can be incredibly rewarding. Recalling his own journey from earning ₹1,500 a month to commanding a substantial salary for over two decades, Ram said, “Television is a dog’s life—until you make it. But if you do, and you’re smart with your money, you’re set for life.”
Kapoor highlighted how fellow actors Ronit Roy and Sakshi Tanwar have smartly built their fortunes through years of dedication and wise investments. “Ronit has multiple homes, including a fantastic villa in Goa. He failed in films and struggled to make ends meet before Ektaa Kapoor gave him a shot on TV. He respected his success from day one,” Ram shared.
He continued, “Sakshi is a very sensible woman. She doesn’t splurge on fancy cars like I do, and because of that, she has enough money to support six generations. People think TV doesn’t pay like films, and it doesn’t — unless you’re in a hit show for 7–8 years. Then your monthly cheque becomes a fortune.”
Ram also warned that many TV actors disappear after their shows end because they failed to manage their finances properly. He credited Ronit Roy as a mentor figure who taught him the importance of saving and investing.
Currently, Kapoor stars in the thriller series Mistry, streaming on JioHotstar. He plays Armaan Mistry, a brilliant but phobia-ridden former detective who returns to the force as a consultant, solving complex cases with unconventional methods. However, the actor was recently dropped from the show’s promotions after allegations surfaced of inappropriate remarks towards members of the publicity and marketing team.
Despite recent controversies, Kapoor’s reflections offer an insightful look into the often overlooked realities — and rewards — of a sustained television career.
