At Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), on the banks of the Hoogly River in Kolkata, President Droupadi Murmu launched the INS Vindhyagiri. The sixth stealth frigate constructed by the Indian Navy under Project 17A is INS Vindhyagiri.During the launch ceremony, key officials including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor SCV Ananda Bose, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, and others were also present.
INS Vindhyagiri will join its two sister ships at the GRSE outfitting jetty following the launch to advance with the last-minute tasks and equipment trials in preparation for their delivery and commissioning.The Project 17A Frigates are the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates’ successor class, with enhanced stealth features, cutting-edge weapons & sensors, and platform management systems.
INS Himgiri and INS Dunagiri are the first and second ships in the series. The three Nilgiri-class frigates were ordered for over $19,200 crore, making it the largest contract the GRSE has ever completed.These vessels are 149 metres long and weigh more than 6,670 tonnes. Their state-of-the-art propulsion system enables speeds of more than 28 knots.
