After a tough period that saw Rohit Sharma drop himself from a Test match in Sydney due to poor form, the India captain has silenced critics with a stunning 119 off 90 balls in Sunday’s second ODI against England. The knock, which included seven sixes, marked a return to form for the elegant opener, who had struggled in recent months following his decision to retire from T20 Internationals after leading India to a second World Cup title.
With the Champions Trophy just around the corner, Rohit’s performance has come as a huge relief, especially after a modest start to the series, where he scored just two runs in the opening ODI. Despite his age – turning 38 in April – and media speculation about his future beyond the upcoming tournament, Rohit’s classy century reassured fans and selectors alike.
“I broke it down into pieces about how I wanted to bat,” said Rohit after his match-winning knock. “You need to assess what you need to do at regular intervals.” His methodical approach to the 50-over format saw him gradually build his innings before unleashing his full range of shots.
Rohit’s performance in Cuttack showcased his hallmark ODI style – initially cautious, then explosive. His ability to assess the pitch conditions, as well as the English bowlers’ tactics, was evident as he adapted and struck with precision.
India will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20, and Rohit’s return to form couldn’t have come at a better time.
