At least 21 people lost their lives in a massive tragedy after a roof of a shelter at a cremation ground collapsed in Uttar Pradesh. More than 20 people were injured due to the tragic incident.
As per the ANI report, most of the victims were relatives and acquaintances of Jai Shree who was being cremated at that time. As it was raining, the mourners had taken refuge under the structure close to the cremation ground. Over 40 people were initially trapped in the debris and the police along with the administration team arrived at the spot after receiving the information and later rescued the people. The victims were admitted to Ghaziabad District Hospital.
Anita c Meshram Divisional Commissioner informed that the authorities have started a probe and strict action will be taken against those who are guilty of this matter.
Around 100 people were attending the funeral procession of a resident of Dayanand Colony, who died on Saturday when the roof collapsed and hardly anyone got a chance to escape. While a few got trapped in the rubble, some managed to save their lives by running.
According to Livehindustan the building structure at the cremation ground was not very old and it is feared that the incident took place because the building was constructed in an area where frequent water-logging takes place. Due to heavy rain, the soil moved and the mishap took place.
After the incident, the local rescue workers joined the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and searched the entire area.
After the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced 2 Lakh financial reliefs for families of the deceased.
Even President Ram Nath Kovind offered condolences to the victim’s families and stated in a Tweet – “ My condolences to the family of the deceased. I pray that those hurt in this accident gets well soon. Local administration is working for relief & assistance.”
