BHUBANESWAR: In a stark reminder of the ever-growing threats of cybercrime, Rosalin Behera, the Tehsildar of Talcher in Odisha’s Angul district, recently lost Rs 90,000 to an online scam. Despite extensive awareness campaigns and alerts issued by government agencies, cases of online fraud continue to rise as criminals exploit unsuspecting victims.
Behera became the latest victim after she received a suspicious message on her mobile phone from an unknown sender. The message contained a deceptive link, which, once clicked, enabled fraudsters to gain unauthorized access to her bank account. Moments later, she received a notification confirming the debit of Rs 90,000 from her account.
The incident highlights the urgent need for vigilance in digital transactions, even among those familiar with cyber security practices. Following the fraudulent transaction, Behera promptly lodged a complaint at the Talcher police station, and authorities have launched an investigation to trace those responsible for the scam.
Online scams have become increasingly sophisticated, often imitating legitimate messages to deceive recipients. Government agencies and cyber experts continuously emphasize the importance of scrutinizing messages from unknown sources, especially when they include links. It’s advised to verify such communications through official channels before engaging with them.
