The Cup comes home, and everyone is proud of the team who has done it! Don’t keep talking about the Asia Cup (Men’s team), because this one is special!
It’s time to tell the world who won the world cup…
Not just Harmanpreet’s team of excellent crickets…
A generation of women who have played the game in the past, and for those who will pick up the game, when they enter their teens, all of them have won this world cup!
This title of World Champions has taken decades to finally reach Indian shores. Does that mean the teams of the past weren’t playing challenging cricket?
No, definitely not! The Indian women’s cricket team had come in close in 1997, 2005, 2017, and in between had heartbreaks of not making it to the business end of the tournament, but then… They persevered!
Diana Edulji, Neetu David, Anjum Chopra, Mitali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and everyone associated with taking the team to new heights…
They won together, they cried together, and at times, wondered if cricket would ever give them back their honor and pride.
And yes, after nearly 5 decades of World Cups for women in cricket, a team from Southeast Asia has won a trophy, and conquered a world cup campaign at home!
Why has it taken five decades? Why did we falter at the last hurdle earlier, and what makes this win special? And most importantly, will the comparison and drawing parallels with the men’s team take a step back? Because each team has its strengths and challenges to address.
After last night’s victory in Navi Mumbai, Smriti, Shefali, Pratika, Deepti, Radha, Jemimah, Renuka, Sree Charani, Richa, Uma, Kranti, Sneh, and the entire team and their support staff will be remembered for a lifetime.
And redemption would have occurred for a man who served domestic cricket for ages; the Indian women’s team’s coach: Amol Muzumdar. A doyen within the domestic and perhaps someone born in an era which was dominated by stalwarts in the men’s team, Amol never got a chance to don the Indian colors, however, here he was, watching every move closely, strategizing and bringing all his years of experience into play, to chart the victory course for women’s cricket in India.
For those who ask who won the cup, it wasn’t just the #womeninblue who played on the field and gave it their everything, it was 33 crore people watching on OTT, a packed house with a sea of blue watching history unfolding, and those millions of girls across various cities and towns in India, who watched in awe and believed, Mai Bhi Khel Sakti Hun!
This will be a seminal moment in Indian Women’s Cricket, and let this remind every girl and boy, that impossible is nothing, and dreams do come true!
Oh, by the way, who won the cup? 1.5 billion people and everyone who deep inside themselves knew that India’s girls and women have the ability to change the world and write their own destiny; through dedication, perseverance and the will to succeed!
Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Cricket team for winning the ODI World Cup 2025! The accolades will pour in, and let the joyride begin. Let these moments of joy be consistent and plenty in the years and decades to come.
Women’s Cricket in India… Passionate, Powerful, Played from the Heart, and now Champions of the World!
