In response to widespread power outages affecting the greater Houston area in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a stern directive to CenterPoint Energy. During a press conference on Sunday, Governor Abbott announced his intention to compel CenterPoint to enhance its hurricane preparation and response measures immediately.
He emphasized the need to prevent future power failures during severe weather events, giving the utility giant until the end of the month to submit detailed plans outlining specific actions.
Governor Abbott expressed dissatisfaction with the current outage situation, which has left approximately 267,797 CenterPoint customers without power as of the latest reports. Despite CenterPoint’s efforts to restore service to over 85% of affected customers, significant challenges remain following Beryl’s landfall near Matagorda, where it disrupted electricity for about 2.7 million homes and businesses statewide.
